In the vast expanse of deep space, beyond our solar system, 'High Life' tells the story of Monte (Robert Pattinson) and his daughter Willow. They are the last survivors aboard a spacecraft, living in complete isolation. Monte, a solitary figure, maintains strict self-discipline as a shield against desire, both his own and that of others. He became a father against his will when his sperm was used to inseminate Boyse, a young woman who then gave birth to Willow.
They were once part of a crew of prisoners, death row inmates, now serving as space convicts. They were sent on a mission to extract alternative energy from a black hole, serving as guinea pigs for scientific experiments. Dr. Dibs (Juliette Binoche), a scientist and the de facto captain, is on board because she murdered her own children and husband before attempting suicide. She's fixated on creating a child in space through artificial insemination, repeatedly attempting and failing. Sexual activity between the prisoners is prohibited. The ship is equipped with "The Box," a device in a small room used obsessively by the crew for masturbation. Dibs administers sedatives to the passengers.
Monte, the only celibate prisoner, rejects Dibs' sexual advances. He is serving a life sentence for murdering a friend who killed his dog as a child. His only friend on the ship is Tcherny (André Benjamin), who is drawn to the onboard garden because it reminds him of Earth. Other prisoners include Boyse (Mia Goth), Nansen (Agata Buzek), Chandra (Lars Eidinger), and Mink (Claire Tran). Pregnant prisoner Elektra delivers a baby, but both die soon after. Chandra, the captain, develops leukemia from radiation and suffers a stroke before Dibs euthanizes him.
One night, a male prisoner named Ettore (Ewan Mitchell) attempts to rape Boyse. Nansen, the pilot, intervenes, but Ettore attacks and overpowers her. Monte arrives and beats Ettore. Later, Mink stabs Ettore to death in the hallway. Dibs begins doubling the prisoners' sedatives and later rapes Monte in his cell while he is sedated. She then injects his semen into Boyse, who gives birth to Willow. Monte is unaware that he is Willow's father.
As the ship approaches the black hole, Nansen prepares to pilot a shuttle around it. Unbeknownst to the others, Boyse kills Nansen and takes her place. The shuttle travels through a molecular cloud that alters its trajectory and causes it to dive into the black hole. Boyse dies due to spaghettification. Mink later attacks Dibs and injures her but is killed by Monte. Dibs informs him that the child is his before ejecting herself into space. Tcherny commits suicide, and Monte buries his body in the garden according to his wishes.
Now the only survivor besides Willow, Monte removes the bodies from the ship's morgue, dresses them in spacesuits, and releases them into the vacuum of space. Monte struggles to raise Willow. He attempts to make repairs to the ship, but Willow's cries distract him, causing him to lose a tool in space. Much later, when Willow is a teenager, they encounter another ship filled with stray dogs who have survived by eating each other. Monte refuses to bring one back, fearing contamination. In the end, Monte and Willow approach the black hole, their ultimate fate left ambiguous.
